Oyuk Ivani Siagian, Jakarta – Indonesia's East Jakarta Metropolitan Police have named 12 suspects in the looting of the home of inactive House of Representatives (DPR) member Surya Utama, also known as Uya Kuya.
East Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Alfian Nurrizal, stated that the suspects had different roles. "Some committed theft, resisted officers when we dispersed them, and were provocateurs," Alfian said when contacted on Saturday, September 6, 2025.
Alfian stated that all suspects have been detained at the East Jakarta Metropolitan Police for questioning. The number of suspects is likely to increase, as the investigation is ongoing. "We are still investigating, and there may be other perpetrators," he said.
Uya Kuya's house was raided by a mob on Saturday night, September 30, 2025. According to videos circulating on social media, hundreds of people tore down the fence of the house located in the Pondok Bambu area, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta. They broke in and looted items up to the second floor.
The looting coincided with a wave of widespread demonstrations in Jakarta that began on August 25, 2025. The demonstrations escalated after an online motorcycle taxi driver named Affan Kurniawan was killed after being run over by a tactical vehicle belonging to the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya).
Looting also occurred at the homes of inactive members of the House of Representatives (DPR), Ahmad Sahroni, Eko Patrio, and Nafa Urbach, as well as the home of Finance Minister Sri Mulyani.
The Head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Indradi, stated that several suspects had been named in the looting incident. However, he could not provide further details. "Please give us some time, we will update you later," he said on Friday, September 5, 2025.
